Will Chicago Med's April & Ethan Get Back Together? Breaking Down Chexton's History
April is back in Chicago, so what's next for Chexton?
Chicago Med features numerous romantic relationships, and one of the most endearing to watch has been the on-again, off-again relationship between Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and ED Nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).
Chicago Med viewers were rooting for April and Ethan to get together from as far back as Season 2. Whether it was while treating patients in the Emergency Room together or through secret glances toward the other after-hours, the connection between April and Ethan is one of the most iconic relationships in all of Chicago Med. The relationship came to a halt at the end of Season 6, when the two separated and April left Chicago Medical Center.
After an exciting Season 8 premiere, viewers and Ethan learn that April is now back in Chicago. But what does this mean for their relationship after everything they've been through together?
What was April Sexton & Dr. Ethan Choi's relationship on Chicago Med?
April and Ethan's relationship has been delightfully complicated: After a Season 2 paved with will-they-won't-they moments, April and Ethan kiss at the end of the season and begin secretly dating in Season 3.
They eventually went public with their relationship to their Chicago Med colleagues and had their fair share of fun before experiencing a few bumps in the road. They briefly separated in Season 4 after a disagreement regarding Ethan's sister, but reunited fairly quickly when April realized that she was pregnant with Ethan's baby. Chicago Med's power couple of Chexton then got engaged.
While everything seemed positive, April suffered a miscarriage, later leading the couple to pursue IVF options. Their efforts to get pregnant continued to be thwarted, and the subsequent tension in their relationship led April to kiss Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains). When a medical issue caused by IVF treatments left April hospitalized, she finally confessed her lapse in fidelity to Ethan. Ethan was naturally distraught, and the pair ended their engagement.
April left Chicago Medical Center at the end of Season 6 after she was accepted into a Nurse Practitioners program. In the same episode, Ethan was shot, leading April to reevaluate their separation. When Ethan woke up in his hospital bed, April was there watching him. She confessed that seeing Ethan in that state helped her realize how much she still loved and cared for him.
April then left Chicago Med screens, with many fans sad to see her go. That is, until the Season 8 Chicago Med premiere, when April made a shocking return.
Will April Sexton & Dr. Ethan Choi get back together on Chicago Med?
April was absent in Season 7, off-camera getting her nursing degree, with Ethan undergoing his own developments after he confronts the death of his estranged father. Season 8 picked up where we left off, with Ethan visiting his father's grave at the end of the premiere. But who does he find paying her respects at the same time? His ex-fiancee April Sexton, of course!
"I um...I saw your dad's obituary," April revealed. "I would have to come to the service. I wasn't sure. I didn't want it to be awkward." Despite the sudden reunion, Ethan is happy to see April again and asks if she is back in Chicago.
April confirmed she has finished her NP program and currently works at a medical group in Chicago. The pair then discussed how Choi feels after the shooting and how his sister Emily is doing. The interaction is simple enough until April hesitantly asks Ethan, "You didn't get married, did you?"
Ethan shook his head. "No, did you?"
April smiled and said, "No." There is a moment of weighted (some might argue romantic) silence before she tells Ethan, "Well, I will see you around." Ethan is left with his jaw agape as he watched April go.
For fans of Chexton, this reunion is a long time coming. Both April and Ethan have clarified that they're single, and while neither offered to necessarily mingle, there is undeniable static electricity still hovering between the two former lovers.
April and Ethan suffered a rocky path in the past, but their time spent apart may have led to the growth needed to make their way back to each other's hearts. Now that April is back in Chicago, time will only tell whether or not viewers can expect an April and Ethan reconciliation.
Choi will leave Chicago Med in Season 8
Tee confirmed to Deadline that he will be exiting Chicago Med, with Dr. Choi's last appearance set for Season 8, Episode 9, titled “Could Be the Start of Something New.” Amid the many changes Dr. Choi has undergone in Season 8, the episode title seems to be alluding to a new chapter that Dr. Choi will explore offscreen.
April and Choi finally reunite
In Season 8, Episode 5, titled "Yep, This Is the World We Live In," Ethan and April met up at a club after a stressful day in the ER together. In the spicy scene, the two former flames danced intimately together, with Chexton fans everywhere screaming with delight at their TV screens. The episode ended with a cliffhanger over whether or not they go in for a kiss, but luckily, Episode 6 picks up from where we left off.
Episode 6, "Mama Said There Would Be Days Like This" begins with Ethan leaving April's apartment to get to work in the morning. Needless to say, kisses are confirmed. He lingers at the door, gazing thoughtfully at a sleeping April in bed. Ethan then leaves a note for April to find once she wakes up, and smiles widely before finally leaving for work.
Chexton is officially back together
The moment all Chexton fans have been waiting for finally happened. In Episode 7, "The Clothes Make the Man... or Do They?" Ethan answered the burning question on all fans' minds after seeing that steamy club scene. Answers arrived via a wholesome conversation with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).
"How are things with April?" Will asked him, which seems to insinuate that not only are April and Ethan back together, but they have been back together for a while.
"To be honest, it's much easier the second time around," Ethan told him. "It's like we got all the big arguments out of the way."
"That's great," Will said.
"It turns out we were walking down the same path this entire time," Ethan explained. "We just didn't know it."
As far as Chicago Med relationships go, April and Ethan's chemistry is simply unrivaled. With so many challenges thrown his way throughout the past few seasons, it's nice to see Ethan finally get a win. But where will Chexton go from here?
