The renowned NBC news anchor recently celebrated a major milestone.
Monday, March 25, 2024, marked a very special day in NBC history, and the network celebrated the occasion in the best way. Read all about it, below.
Chuck Scarborough celebrates 50 years with NBC
On March 25, the Empire State Building lit up in blue and gold to honor the 50th anniversary of WNBC journalist Chuck Scarborough. A beloved voice in the New York broadcast landscape, his first day officially joining the team on WNBC as a news anchor was March 1974. He originally delivered the news from the prolific 30 Rockefeller Plaza in the same studio where The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon currently airs.
"This is such an extraordinary honor," Scarborough told NBC New York on March 25 during the light up event.
"I can't thank the Empire State Building, Dan [Rogoski] and everybody enough, for this singular honor," he added. "This has just been wonderful, and what a great way to kick off my celebration of 50 years cause it was a Monday on March 25th, exactly 50 years ago, that I walked through the doors of NBC and began this career that has brought me to this point."
Meanwhile, Scarborough's colleagues are more than proud of what he's accomplished in his five decade run.
“Chuck Scarborough is a giant in American journalism and the face of television news for generations of viewers, including me. He is also the longest serving television anchor in the largest, most prestigious television market in America – making his 50-year anniversary even more remarkable," said Eric Lerner, president and general manager of NBC 4 New York, according to AdWeek. “This is a milestone that may never be broken and a wonderful testament to Chuck’s life-long passion for storytelling, his commitment to journalistic excellence and the deep admiration he holds among all of us.”
“In a city defined by change, Chuck has been a constant force for truth and exceptional journalism,” said Amy Morris, senior vice president of News for NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47. “A half century after he walked into 30 Rock, he continues to lead by example, collaborating with the team and challenging everyone to make every newscast even better.”
Congratulations, Chuck!
To further celebrate his impact, WNBC will air a tribute to Scarborough on March 28 titled “Chuck Scarborough’s 50th Anniversary”. The 30-minute special will include career highlights and interviews surrounding his expansive time on the network.
