As the official synopsis for “The Killer on Camera 4” episode explains: “When a firefighter is murdered, the investigation unravels a web of secrets, a love triangle and stunning surveillance footage.”

Dateline correspondent Dennis Murphy told NBC Insider that the apartment building surveillance footage uncovered in the case plays a critical role in discovering the killer.

"Shocking" surveillance video shows intruder pacing in alley

"Seeing the back alley surveillance video was shocking," Murphy said. “So often in my experience, surveillance cams disappoint the investigators. They’re either broken or have recorded over the crucial footage. Not here! You see the intruder pacing about that alley, almost as though he’s asking himself, am I really going to do this?”

Despite the hesitation, the intruder made his way inside.

“He tests the windows, then you see him hoist himself up, through the window and into the apartment to carry out his cold killing of a stranger, someone he must see as a romantic rival but in fact is not,” Murphy added. “A murder based on obsession and delusion. And of a fellow firefighter, one in the Brotherhood.”

The two-hour special includes new interviews with Kim Hickey, Jon Hickey, Jenn Greene, Beth Greene, Randy Greene, Val Vaughn and Ryan O’Connor.

The biggest challenge to telling the story, according to Murphy, was “structural” because two of the main players in the real-life story were named Jen/Jenn.

“Would the audience be able to follow who was the wife of the accused and who was the former girlfriend? One positively IDs the accused in that all-important surveillance video and the other shreds his alibi,” Murphy explained. “The viewer doesn’t have the luxury of flipping back a few a pages for a refresher or who’s who. I worried about that.”

As for what he hopes viewers take away from the story, Murphy shared two things.

“That’s the courage of Jenn Greene to come forward with her changed story, burning her ex-husband’s alibi and testifying to it in court. That took a lot of nerve,” he said. “Secondly, I hope people get a sense of what a first-rate detective Val Vaughn was and what a compassionate person she’ll remain in her retirement years. Every police department in the nation should have at least one Val Vaughan.”
