Dan + Shay formed their band in 2013 and have had a number of hit songs, but it hasn't always been an easy road. In 2021, they were estranged, though they've since reconciled. "You guys came off The Arena Tour, and things were bad. We heard you didn't talk for four months. What was the thing that rekindled this relationship?" The Voice Host and TODAY co-host Carson Daly asked them in July 2023.

"Being in a duo is the toughest configuration," Smyers said. "We always say, there's two people. Everything's 50/50. When you're in a trio, there's always a tie breaker. When you're in a group, its chaos. But in a duo you have to go out of your way to work on it. Like a marriage. And time gets in the way, and if you're not actively working on it, things can go by the wayside."
