The Voice’s Jaelen Johnston Says He’s Broken Up with His Girlfriend of 3 Years
Heartbreak can be a source of creativity on The Voice.
The Voice Season 27's cutie patootie cowboy, Jaelen Johnston, just revealed that he and his girlfriend of three years are no longer together. And he channeled his heartbreak into a fantastic performance for Knockouts.
Jaelen Johnson stepped outside his comfort zone on The Voice
Ever since his first appearance during the Blind Auditions, the Team Kelsea Artist has been all country, all the time. But for his Knockout round, he chose "Dial Drunk" by Noah Kahan, a musician who also has folk influences in his music. "This song’s not traditional country," Johnston explained in his signature deep voice, adding, "There’s a lot of raw emotion in it."

It was that emotion that he connected to. "This song’s about wanting a relationship connection so bad that you’d do almost anything for it," he said, adding that the "feelings of heartbreak" were real because "recently me and my girlfriend of three years broke up." For every cloud a silver lining: Jaelen won his Knockout round.

Jaelen Johnston has been making the Voice Coaches blush since the beginning
During the Blind Auditions, Johnston showed off not only his vocal ability and guitar skills but also his impeccable manners. When Ballerini asked the cowboy hat-wearing Artist if he also writes, he responded "Yes, ma'am."
Then at the Battles, he let them glimpse his heartbroken side. Coach Kelsea Ballerini assigned Johnston "Neon Moon" by Brooks & Dunn; after the performance, all three of the male Coaches found themselves deeply impressed by Johnston's lower range, with Adam Levine saying, "I don't even feel like a man anymore." John Legend commented, "The richness in your voice, the texture in it, is so special," and Michael Bublé agreed, saying, "I found that to be such a romantic performance."

Ballerini was especially impressed with his emotionality. "Jaelen, you sing like you've had your heart broken, and I mean that in a good way," she told him, promising that, whoever hurt him, "I'll kill her."
