John Legend & Chance the Rapper Had a Harmony-Off to Win Nadège on The Voice
Did we just see Chance the Rapper out-"Legend" John Legend himself?
When you’re one of the Coaches on The Voice, sometimes you’ve just gotta go that extra, extra mile for your Artist... even if it means jokingly swallowing your pride and singing a competing Coach’s song.
That’s just what happened in a surprise turn on Monday’s Season 25 Blind Audition premiere, where Chance the Rapper amazed everyone (even himself!) by leaping from his chair to stage an impromptu vocal duet with 26-year old Artist Nadège — all in a moonshot bid to win the silken-voiced singer over to his team.

The catch? Chance wasn’t just singing any song, but a John Legend song. And he had to follow right in the footsteps of Legend himself, who’d just harmonized with Nadège like a pair of seasoned pros through a quick, impromptu a capella duet of Legend’s own 2005 hit “Ordinary People.”

It all seemed so simple at first: Legend and Chance had their minds made up early, and hit their big red Coaches’ buttons for Nadège almost at the same time. But right from the very first opening notes of Nadège's smooth cover of Daniel Caesar’s “Get You,” Legend seemed like the obvious Coaching match for her delicate, pitch-perfect R&B soul sound.
Heck, even Reba McEntire and Dan + Shay knew better than to try to out-Coach Legend on his home-genre turf. As Dan put it afterward, “I looked over and saw John turn — and I was like, ‘Welp, we’ve got absolutely no chance!’”
Shay assured Nadège, meanwhile, that “you are an unbelievable talent. You’re gonna crush this show!”
Chance, though, wasn’t fazed by a little friendly Coaches’ competition. After Nadège confessed that Legend’s “Ordinary People” was the first song she’d ever performed for an audience, Legend seized the opportunity to team up with her for a quick duet… but what looked like a sure way to lock Nadège in with Team Legend turned out to be far more tricky.
“I’ll sing ‘Ordinary People’ with you too!” offered Chance — and a second later, he was onstage with Nadège doing a mighty impressive John Legend impersonation himself. It was enough to get even Legend to confess that he might’ve just have witnessed his Coaches’ hopes get upstaged by his own song: “They call him ‘The Rapper,’” he said after tuning in to Chance’s vocal show. “But he’s also a singer!”

In the end, Nadège must’ve agreed, because she sided with Team Chance, explaining that “I really do admire Chance’s ability to dive into so many different genres and really make it his own.”
But just like Legend, we can’t help but wonder if maybe; just maybe, Chance’s surprise sing-along also influenced her decision. “Chance’s gambit worked,” a stunned (but still impressed) Legend said afterward. “He very adeptly stole my trick! Used it against me! Well played Chance… well played.”
