What to know about "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole
Written by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells in 1945, the tune is also commonly referred to by its first line, "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire." In 1946, Nat King Cole and his band recorded it twice — once with a string section and once without — and the strings version became an instant success. Cole recorded the song again in 1953 and in 1961, and the '61 recording is now considered the definitive version of the song. It's a cozy down-tempo tune about the simple pleasures of the holiday: decorations, carolers, warm clothing and presents.
