What to know about "Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley
"Blue Christmas" was originally recorded by singer Doye O'Dell in 1948. However, it was Presley's 1957 version of the tune, off his best-selling LP Elvis' Christmas Album, that made "Blue Christmas" into the classic holiday tune it is today.
In 2011, Rolling Stone listed "Blue Christmas" as the seventh best Christmas song of all time, particularly noting Presley's performance of the song during his iconic 1968 comeback special on NBC.
The song remains one of the most beloved Christmas tunes to this day. In 2022, Garden & Gun named "Blue Christmas" as a standout track on Elvis' Christmas Album.
"Elvis injects a heightened version of his signature breathy drawl into lyrics about unrequited love," the outlet wrote about the song.
"Blue Christmas" has since been covered by Terry Fator, Kodi Lee, Martina McBride, Bruce Springsteen, The Beach Boys, Michael Buble, Lady A, and more.
