Watch Kendrick Lamar's Iconic Performances From the SNL Season 48 Premiere
We're still in awe.
The critically-acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar was the musical guest for Saturday Night Live's Season 48 premiere on October 1. He performed twice, the first being a mashup of his songs “Rich Spirit” and “N95,” and then a rendition of “Father Time,” all from his new album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
During his first appearance, while rapping “Rich Spirit,” he stood onstage in front of blue lighting while his shadow danced to the rhythm behind him. “Tryna keep a balance, I’m staying strong,” he rapped during a nuanced performance.

Then, the instruments shifted to a more intense beat as he transitioned into “N95." The lights circled around him, revealing him standing in front of a blank stage with a house fan blowing in his direction. “Take off your idols, take off the runway,” he rapped with passion.
During his second performance of “Father Time," the stage set-up changed as he rapped in front of a bed, desk, and chair with musician Sampha, who is featured on the same track off of Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. “Lookin’ for I love you, rarely empathizing for my relief,” Lamar rapped powerfully, with the emotional lyrics touching on his family and childhood struggles. After the song concluded with Sampha’s vocals, the audience erupted into applause.
Other musical guests for SNL this season include Willow on October 8 and Megan Thee Stallion on October 15.
Watch Saturday Night Live on Saturdays at 11:30/10:30 on NBC and next day on Peacock.
