The Voice fans were treated with a performance of one of John Legend's greatest hits during October 24's Battle Rounds episode. But a plot twist? It didn't actually come from Legend himself.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

When Team Blake members Kevin Hawkins and Hillary Torchiana were chosen to face off, Shelton picked Legend's 2019 chart-topper "Preach" for the duo to tackle.

"John's such a melodic writer, and he's got so much drama and dynamics in his music that it's 'gonna give these two a chance to show us all the tools they have in the shed," the country star said.

Of course, Shelton was right, and both Hawkins and Torchiana nailed their respective renditions. They even managed to impress Legend.

"Thank you for singing my song. I felt your passion, I felt your love," he said. "It was really beautifully executed. Hillary, you're a wonderful singer and it felt like you really dug into the spirit of the song. Kevin, hearing you song reminded me of how upset I was with Gwen when she Blocked me."

Of course, he's referencing Hawkins' memorable Four-Chair Turn Blind Audition. The Dallas native's take on Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" had all the Coaches vying for the singer—except for Legend. He was Blocked by Gwen Stefani.

"A piano teacher who sings Stevie Wonder, and I don't have a chance to fight for him," Legend said at the time. "I wish I could work with you, Kevin."

Hawkins had just as much success during the Battle Rounds when Shelton picked him over Torchiana to advance to the Knockouts. The piano teacher joins fellow Team Blake members Austin Montgomery, bodie, Brayden Lape, Eva Ullman, Jay Allen, and Kate Kalvach.
