LaRoyce Hawkins Reveals Hidden Talent with a Surprise Video for Season 10's Finale
We have a wordsmith on set! Be sure to watch Season 10 episodes of Chicago P.D. on NBC.
LaRoyce Hawkins (Atwater) definitely has a way with words.
On May 24, the Chicago P.D. star uploaded a surprising and moving video that showed him reading an original poem. The actor wrote it to honor the Season 10 finale of the show, which was an intense hour that left Ruzek's (Patrick John Flueger) fate in question after he was rushed to emergency surgery after being shot.
But if anything could distract us from the worrying ending to the season, it's Hawkins' impeccable flow and wordplay timing. In the artsy, black and white Instagram video, Hawkins sported square frames and a bomber jacket while confidently reciting the heartfelt words he wrote. Smooth, soulful jazz played over the clip which was cut with a montage of special moments from the Chicago P.D. set.
"If smooth is fast then nothing ever lasts in the long-run.. @nbconechicago let’s have great finale," Hawkins captioned the video, to which the official NBC Once Chicago page responded with a slew of proud clapping emojis.
But fans shouldn't worry. While the piece may have seemed like a goodbye to the series, it was actually Hawkins' way of using his passion for spoken word to honor the decade long run of Chicago P.D.
“It was most important for me to write a composition that honored family," the actor told NBC Insider. "Not just the families that have supported us by watching every Wednesday night over the last 10 years, but also the families we’ve fed and supported overtime by showing up everyday.”

LaRoyce Hawkins' poem, "White Pages"
I wrote this on the White pages
from Jin to Jay
at every phase
it’s hard to pick a favorite
if smooth is fast
then nothing ever lasts in the long run
who gave the pride and joy from Harvey Illinois the long gun?
May Chicago set the perfect scene / for the families that watch and the families we feed”
May Chicago set the perfect scene
for the families that watch and the families we feed
if we can reimagine cops
the whole hood would believe
that every bridge that was built
planted seeds for the seasons
10 deep,
1000 doors defeated
200 strong
and it’s not a long list that can reach it
if you Open Up your Word make sure that you keep it
and “the best idea wins”
is a sensitive (family) secret
I wrote this on the White pages
from Jin to Jay
at every phase
it’s hard to pick a favorite
if smooth is fast
then nothing ever lasts in the long run
You gave the pride and joy from Harvey Illinois the long gun.

Meanwhile, in an interview with NBC Insider, Hawkins opened up about his character Atwater's rocky relationship with his father, Lew (Erik LaRay Harvey) in recent episodes.
"I think Atwater and his dad become the heroes toward the end, but they start off as stray humans that are miscommunicating, their miscommunication that we have to overcome and go through. So, I just want it to be real. I know a lot of father and son relationships are different, but they are real to everybody individually. Hopefully other families of fathers and sons can relate and learn from what we go through," he said.
