Watch Late Night with Seth Meyers' First A Closer Look of October 2023
Meyers had a LOT of ground to cover in his first segment in five months—and managed to do so in one jaw-dropping sentence.
On Monday, October 2, Late Night with Seth Meyers came back to NBC with its first new episode after a five-month absence, kicking things off with a special full hour of "A Closer Look."
As fans of the political humor segment might expect—particularly after Host Seth Meyers teased a preview in an Instagram post ahead of the episode—the long-awaited return of "A Closer Look" focused on former president Donald J. Trump, as well as the GOP's in-fighting and Biden's impeachment. But first, Meyers had a lot to catch viewers up on, given that so much has happened in the news that the show hasn't been able to comment on.
So Meyers kicked things off with one jaw-droppingly long summary.

After taking what we can only imagine was the deepest breath imaginable, Meyers went in: "Donald Trump appeared in a Manhattan courthouse today after a judge determined that he and his family lied about their business for years, House Republicans descended into chaos and finger pointing while simultaneously shutting down the government and embarrassing themselves in a sham impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden that even their own witness admitted did not have any evidence, Florida congressman Matt Gaetz announced that he'll try to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, Trump is preparing for another hearing over a proposed gag order to stop him from making threats in a run-up to his criminal trial for his attempted coup, trial dates have been set in three of Trump's criminal cases for stealing classified documents, trying to overturn an election, and paying hush money to a porn star, Trump was caught on tape admitting he has secret military documents that were not declassified—he kept a box of classified documents in his bathroom—he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil trial, called for the former Joint Chief of Staff to be executed, reneged on a promise to pay his ex-lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who was also indicted by a grand jury in Atlanta for election interference, and is being sued by his ex-lawyer for failure to pay as well as by Hunter Biden for tampering with his laptop..."
And that was quite literally only the half of it, as Meyers' summary went on for a nonstop minute and a half total.
With the extended runtime, the October 2 "A Closer Look" was able to take a hilarious deep dive into several of these stories. "We still got it!" Meyers cheered at the end.
