“Law & Order is a well-oiled machine," Long Bright River star John Doman said. "It just rolls.”
Emmy Award-winner Amanda Seyfried plays a Philadelphia cop hunting down a killer and searching for her missing sister on Long Bright River, streaming now on Peacock.
But as the eight-part series unfolds, viewers may recognize another familiar face in the twisty thriller: John Doman, who plays a key character on Long Bright River, has been a frequent presence in the Law & Order universe, which he calls “a well-oiled machine.”
In a recent interview with NBC Insider, Doman discussed Long Bright River and his multiple appearances across the Law & Order TV landscape.

Who does John Doman play on Long Bright River?
On Long Bright River, Doman portrays Gee, the grandfather of two sisters, Mickey (Seyfried) and Kacey (Ashleigh Cummings). “I’m trying to deal with the fact that I love them both, but I failed,” Doman said of Gee.
Doman described Gee as “a blue-collar guy” who stepped up to raise his daughter’s girls after the mom died of a drug overdose.
“He’s real old school. Doesn’t like to show his emotions, he’s a tough guy,” Doman said. “He’s put in a situation with his family, with the tragedy of losing his daughter.”
Doman explained that Gee took a very strict, hardline approach to raising his granddaughters “to try to keep them on the straight and narrow.”
Speaking as Gee, he said, “I fail, at least in the case of one of the sisters … I am trying to make up for what I did.”
Who does John Doman play on Law & Order?
Like his conflicted Long Bright River character, Doman has played other characters dealing with dilemmas. In fact, he's essentially lost count of how many characters he’s played in the Law & Order franchise. “I think it’s about 11,” he said, adding that it’s always “great” being part of the L&O TV landscape.
In terms of an episode count, Doman has made 13 appearances across five different shows, based on an IMDB tally. Doman has appeared on five episodes of Law & Order, five episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and one episode each of Law & Order: Trial by Jury, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
“Law & Order is, like, a well-ordered, well-oiled machine. It just rolls,” Doman told NBC Insider. “It’s a really good experience to work on that show.”
And Doman’s Long Bright River experience was equally rich and rewarding.
“For me, this character has some complexities,” he said. “That’s usually what an actor wants — conflicts and the complexities within that kind of pop out here and there.”
All eight episodes of Long Bright River are streaming now on Peacock.
