Everything to Know About New Amsterdam’s Final Season (UPDATED)
It will be the medical drama's fifth and final season.
We finally have a release date for Season 5 of New Amsterdam, but the news is sure to be bittersweet for fans. It officially marks the beginning of the end for the beloved medical drama, as NBC announced in spring 2022 that the fifth season would be its last.
For four seasons, the beloved series has followed medical director Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), his fellow doctors, their patients, and the politics surrounding New Amsterdam, one of the oldest hospitals in the country.

“The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring,” Lisa Katz, president of scripted programming for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, told Deadline in a statement. “We’re so grateful to [creator/executive producer] David Schulner, [director/executive producer] Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent, and collaboration.”
Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, added, “When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?’ Over the last four seasons, David, Peter, and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We’re so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam to life. Bravo!”

When is the release date for New Amsterdam Season 5?
New Amsterdam Season 5 premieres Tuesday, September 20 at 10/9c on NBC and next day on Peacock.
Is there a trailer?
While we don't yet have an official trailer, NBC did release a First Look that sees Eggold getting emotional as he reflects on the final season of New Amsterdam.
"I can't believe we're here five seasons in and it's already our fifth and final season," he said, "and just an excitement to bring the show to a close and to sort of put a period at the end of that sentence. You don't always get the opportunity to end the story so it's going to be an exciting last chapter."
Are there any photos from New Amsterdam Season 5?
We don't have any photos from the episodes, yet. However, the season's Fall First Look poster was released with Max front and center.
How many episodes will there be?
13 episodes.
Will the entire cast return in Season 5?
In addition to new series regular Sandra Mae Frank (Dr. Elizabeth Wilder), most of the main cast will return for Season 5.This includes Eggold, Janet Montgomery (Lauren Bloom), Jocko Sims (Floyd Reynolds), and Tyler Labine (Iggy Frome).
What's next for characters like Reynolds, Iggy, and Bloom?
Executive producer David Schulner teased what we could expect this fall to TV Insider.
“For Season 5, you want to end where you begin,” he said. "I think for us, let’s go back to that energy of Season 1 and look at where we started all the characters and make sure we end them in a place where they began. So for Bloom, it was about her addiction...so her mom (played by Gina Gershon) can’t be far behind."
He added, “For Iggy [it] was about his sense of self. And for Reynolds, it was about wanting a family. So looking at those core issues that we set up for all of our characters in Season 1, how can we bring those things to a conclusion in Season 5, knowing it’s our last?”
Jocko Sims, who's played Dr. Reynolds since Season 1, has some ideas for his character. And it's related to the extremely complicated love triangle between Lyn Malvo (Frances Turner)—who is allegedly pregnant with his child—and her husband, Claude Baptiste (Andre Blake).
"I would hope that he finds a good balance with his kid and Dr. Malvo, who is the mother of his child—if that is such the case, right?" Sims told NBC Insider. "There's all kinds of twists and turns in television. And I hope that he's able to get some answers to some questions that he has, regarding his father."
Schulner also spilled that Max is set to take Sharpe's absence "really hard", Bloom takes on a "very surprising roommate", and an "unexpected romance" is also in the cards.
How can I watch New Amsterdam?
You can watch and stream all episodes on NBC.com or Peacock. Once the series returns in the fall, the new episodes will stream the day after they air on Peacock.
