The 2025 PGA Players Championship was so good, they needed a whole extra day to fit in all the amazing golf.

At the end of Monday's thrilling three-hole playoff at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in the Jacksonville, Florida area of Ponte Vedra Beach, tour-favorite Rory Mcllroy came out on top, besting J.J. Spaun to take home the sterling silver and 24K gold vermeil Tiffany & Co. trophy. Of course, the winner of the PGA Tour's flagship event gets a whole lot more than a nice trophy.

Head below to find everything you need to know about the playoff at the 2025 Players Championship, the prizemoney earned for the richest PGA Tour event, and how Mcllroy overcame the ghosts of big tourney's past to become this year's champ.

How much money did Rory Mcllroy make for winning the 2025 Players Championship?

Rory Mcllroy won $4.5 million for winning the 2025 Players Championship, beating J.J. Spaun in a three-hole playoff to take home the lion's share of the $25 million total purse. Spaun earned $2,725,000 for his runner-up finish.

Besides the custom-designed Tiffany & Co. trophy and the whopping check, as the winner of the 2025 Players Championship, Mcllroy also gets fully exempt status on the PGA Tour through the 2030 season (not including the majors), so he can enter whatever events he likes for the next five years, without having to qualify. He also gets a five-year exemption for The Players Championship, as well as three-year exemptions for all four majors: the Masters, PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and the British Open Championship. Mcllroy also gets 750 FedEx Cup points, giving him the inside track to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs, where the PGA Tour's top 70 players compete for the season-long title (and the whopping purse that comes with it).

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland poses with THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 trophy.

When was the last time Rory Mcllroy won a major?

Though technically not a major, The Players Championship is widely regarded as one of the most important events on tour, and the prize money certainly reflects that. This year's win is the first of such caliber for Rory Mcllroy since 2019, when he last won the Players Championship. But you have to go all the way back to 2014 for the last time Mcllroy won an actual major, when he lit the golf world on fire with wins at the 2014 PGA Championship and the 2014 British Open.

The talented 35-year-old from Northern Ireland earned his 28th PGA Tour victory today in dramatic fashion, bringing his career playoff record to 4-2, including four straight victories. But Mcllroy has let some truly heartbreaking major opportunities slip through the cracks along the way, including losing the 2024 U.S. Open this past June by missing some makeable (for pros, at least) putts down the stretch.

But with the latest win and a win last month at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Mcllroy is starting to heat up, just as the majors are coming up on the PGA Tour schedule, including the U.S. Open from the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania from June 12-15, with complete coverage on The Golf ChannelNBC,USA Network, and Peacock.

Comcast Business is a Proud Partner of the PLAYERS Championship, in addition to Optum and Morgan Stanley.
