The famously straightforward Simon Cowell is not a fan of cell phones.

How to Watch

Watch the Season 20 premiere of America's Got Talent on Tuesday, May 27 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock

Cowell isn't a fan of uninspiring song selections on America's Got Talent and dogs that are cuter than his. Still, fans had no idea the star was so adverse to modern technology until recently. In a 2024 interview with YouTuber Evan Carmichael, the longtime AGT Judge made a shocking confession: He hates his smartphone so much that he stopped carrying one around a long time ago!

"I hate them so much," he revealed. "I think they're boring. For me, I think it's like having a toaster with you all the time. It's like, it's a toaster, and a phone is just as boring. It's like, toast is nice and occasionally a telephone call is nice, but not all the bloody time."

So there you have it: Cowell thinks phones are boring!

And while he technically still owns a cell phone, Cowell admitted he rarely touches it.

"I have one that sits in the car," Cowell said. "Nine times out of ten, I'll use somebody else's because I don't even know how to work it anymore."

Like many people, Cowell realized that being untethered to his phone for weeks and months at a time made him happier. So, he instantly made an adjustment in his day-to-day life and decided to stop using his toaster-adjacent appliance permanently.

"When I realized by not being on it for about three or four months a year, I was happier that time, and then when it was like, 'Oh God, it's time to turn my phone back on, I started to dread it," Cowell explained. "And then one day, I thought I'd lost it, and it's like, 'Oh God, I've lost my life.' And it's like, 'Oh stop being so dramatic. It's a stupid telephone. I don't use 99% of the things on it."

"It's absolutely brilliant to announce our 20th season of AGT," Cowell said in a statement. "Over the years, we've seen amazing Acts and met truly incredible people. It's true that two or three minutes can change your life, and I want to thank every Contestant, all the fans who have supported the show every year, and to NBC for believing in this show. And of course, the amazing team, past and present, who make the show so special. Now as always, I am really excited to meet the Contestants this year."

With Heidi Klum departing the show, Mel B will return as a Judge in Season 20, joining Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara!
