The Big Three—Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown)—were very defined characters on This Is Us. They each had qualities you could identify with; that's why they were so interesting to watch. Why: "I really think that there’s a lot of similarities in Kevin and Kate. He’s been judged purely by the way he looks and just being a handsome guy—and not really for who he is and for who maybe he wants to be. So [Kate and Kevin], they’re opposite but absolutely the same."

Why: "The one thing that Kevin has always been doing is vying for his mother’s attention and affection, 'cause he felt like he wasn’t getting that attention like Randall was and like Kate was. And so that’s what I did as a kid with my own mother. In fact, I excelled in football, and I thought I wanted to be a professional football player. Then, I became an actor. I thought if I excelled in football, if I’m really good at football, my mom would want to come see me play football, and she’d be so proud of me. And if I'm an actor and I am working, if I get any sort of recognition or notoriety or just a career, then my mom will like me and appreciate me and love me and want to support me. I see Kevin doing the same things that I did. I’ve always felt that about Kevin's character.
Susan Kelechi Watson (Susan)

Why: Always, from day one, I've told Justin I identify with his character. There is something in what he struggles with and the things that he goes through and the way that he lives his life. I don't know what it is. I can't say it's the same for me at all, but there is something about his journey that really resonates with me.
