Who is John Munch?

John Munch is a detective in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit universe. His character was first introduced in the NBC police drama Homicide: Life on the Street in 1993. Munch’s character then got transferred over to Law & Order in 1996. Munch’s first SVU appearance was in the show’s first season in 1999, and his character stayed on until 2016 for a whopping 326 episodes. When it comes to Munch’s personality, he was known for being stubborn, cynical, and had a knack for conspiracy theories.

“Richard Belzer's Detective John Munch is one of television's iconic characters. I first worked with Richard on the Law & Order/Homicide crossover and loved the character so much, I told [screenwriter] Tom [Fontana] that I wanted to make him one of the original characters on SVU. The rest is history.” SVU executive producer Dick Wolf told People about Munch’s legacy.

Who is Richard Belzer?

Richard Belzer was an American actor known for his dry sense of humor, which he channeled into many of his characters. He got his start in stand-up comedy in the '70s and later transferred to film and television.

Unfortunately, Belzer passed away on February 19, 2023, at the age of 78. Many of his SVU co-stars paid tribute to him, publicly honoring his life.

“Richard brought humor and joy into all our lives, was the consummate professional and we will all miss him very much," Wolf said to People.

“Goodbye my dear, dear friend. I will miss you, your unique light, and your singular take on this strange world. I feel blessed to have known you and adored you and worked with you, side by side, for so many years. How lucky the angels are to have you. I can hear them laughing already . I love you so very much, now and forever,” Mariska Hargitay posted on her Instagram page.
