Why the Coaches Were “Taken Aback” by Val T. Webb’s “Worship Service” 4-Chair Audition
Webb decided to try out for The Voice on the advice of her son, bringing to mind the early trajectory of Huntley in Season 24.
Val T. Webb, a 43-year-old singer from New Braunfels, Texas, nabbed the final spot on Team Chance during Tuesday night's (March 12) episode of The Voice following one of the most impressive Blind Auditions ever seen on the show.
Her soulful performance of Deborah Cox's "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" yielded a Four-Chair Turn and was described as "flawless" by both John Legend and Reba McEntire. Shay Mooney (of first-ever Coaching duo Dan + Shay) hailed Webb as a shining talent. "You have such a light," he said. "I don’t think it’s the lights behind you, I think it’s just you that’s lightning up this room."
“That was one of the best performances we’ve seen," echoed Dan Smyers, adding, "You kicked it into a whole other gear and it was just unbelievable. You’re gonna do so well, whatever team you choose."

Chance the Rapper praised Webb's "breath control" and "high register," as well as her ability to mold the song to her identity. "I feel like that’s what this show is all about, people showing their true personalities through their music … I really, really think that we can make some special moments together.”
Webb, a faith director who also works as a backup vocalist for established singers like India.Arie and Yolanda Adams, decided to try out for the show on the advice on her son, Joshua. It feels redolent of the previous season when Huntley (another Four-Chair juggernaut) chose Team Niall on the advice of his daughter, Stella, and ended up winning the whole kit and caboodle. Moral of the story: listen to your children!
“My son has been asking me for at least the past three years, ‘Mom, when are you gonna go on The Voice?’" Webb confessed, going on to add, "I’ve done some amazing things in my lifetime, but I want to show my kids that no matter where you are in your life, don’t ever stop pursuing your dreams. Don’t ever look at your age, don’t look at anything that may be a barrier to everybody else. Go for it, no matter where you are in your life."

With four incredible Coaches to choose from, Webb selected Chance the Rapper based on what she saw of his work throughout Season 23. "The way that he helped shape and mold his Artists was simply incredible, and I’m looking for that in a Coach," she explained. "I’m looking for somebody that can bring all that creativity out."

“I’ve been waiting for so long to find somebody I feel has a powerhouse voice and can really carry R&B," said Chance. "I think some of my most important arrangements this season are gonna come out of working with Val."
