Colin Jost and Michael Che's Christmas Joke Swap Had a Twist on "Weekend Update"
Che brought a special guest to put the pressure on Colin Jost in a truly jaw-dropping round of Joke Swap for SNL's Christmas episode.
Christmas came early for "Weekend Update" fans on December 16's Saturday Night Live, as Michael Che and Colin Jost delivered their 2023 Christmas Joke Swap—with a twist. Jost and Che's semi-regular tradition of forcing each other to read lines designed to shock each other (and the audience) featured a special guest, who was meant to bear witness in what might've been the most shocking Joke Swap ever.
"Well, tonight is our Christmas show, and we have a tradition where Che and I give each other jokes to read," Jost said, explaining the segment to the unfamiliar.
"We're making each other read jokes live on air that the other person has never seen before," Che agreed.
"And the idea is to give each other fun jokes," Jost said/pleaded to Che.
"Sure," Che answered. "But before we start, there's someone very special here who was last on the show in Season 3, 46 years ago. Poet, author, and activist, please welcome Dr. Hattie Davis, ladies and gentlemen!"
After welcoming Dr. Davis, who was a fictional person being played by an actress (though it's unclear whether Jost knew that), Che turned to Jost and said, "Colin, you can start with your first joke."

Weekend Update's Christmas Joke Swap Included Jokes About Colin Jost's Wife
Every Joke Swap seems to find Colin Jost burying his face in his hand in embarrassment. But the twist of Dr. Hattie Davis sitting next to him as (a very game) witness, paired with a series of jokes too off-color to print here, took things to the next level.
The lines Che wrote for Jost even included a few roasts of Jost's wife, Five-Timers club member Scarlett Johansson. "New York state now allows movie theaters to serve alcohol, which is how I'm finally able to enjoy my wife's little art movies," Jost was forced to say, laughing as an image of Johansson in her Marvel film Black Widow was shown.
"I’m not sure I laughed harder at anything this year than the SNL joke swap Black Widow punchline last night," one viewer, journalist Greg Wyshynski wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, as fans raved about the particularly brutal 2023 installment.
