Why La Brea Is Filmed Thousands of Miles Away From L.A.
Where the cast actually films may surprise you.
Ever look at the exotic, jungle-like surroundings on NBC's La Brea and wonder how, exactly, the cast was transported to 10,000 B.C., untouched by modern civilization? Well, part of what we see is due to the wonder of CGI. But also, spoiler alert: In spite of the show's name, they're not actually in L.A. Much of the credit goes to filming the sci-fi series thousands of miles away. Find out more, below.
Where is La Brea filmed?
The time-traveling adventure drama is filmed all the way in Victoria, Australia across various locations outside of Melbourne. Certain towns in the area offer miles of lush greenery.
"Australia is amazing," Jack Martin, who plays Josh Harris, told NBC Insider. "We really take advantage of the country out here. We go all over the place to shoot. We go to the mountains, we go out to the water and we're able to recreate all of these wild environments from pre-historic times, to all kinds of different places. And it involves us driving hours out in the middle of nowhere to shoot, but it's gorgeous out here."
When it came to choosing where exactly the series would be filmed, it was an easy choice for showrunner David Appelbaum.
"It's beautiful," he said. "There's a rugged, untouched quality to a lot of the Australian landscape. I think that really matched the idea of an untapped land of 10,000 B.C. The landscapes, the rivers, the mountainous areas, really offers a lot of gorgeous scenery, which is really perfect for shooting a show that takes place before civilization."
