Who does Reid Scott play in Law & Order?

Series regular Reid Scott plays Detective Vincent Riley, who was partnered with Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) in the premiere of Law & Order Season 23.

Riley became Shaw's new partner after actor Jeffrey Donovan — who played Shaw's previous partner, Detective Frank Cosgrove — didn't return for Season 23 of Law & Order.

"Having a new partner is fantastic," Brooks told NBC Insider at a red carpet event before the Season 23 premiere. "Reid Scott is an incredible actor. We’re lucky to have him. He’s the right choice. He and I have discussed at length about making the partnership the third character... And we’re having a great time.

"There’s a little more comedy, a little more conflict, and there’s some secrets," Brooks added. "He’s kind of on a redemptive track and he has some things to make up for, and Shaw finds out a little late and that doesn’t go over too well, but we love conflict.”

Who is Reid Scott?

Fans most likely recognize Scott from his recurring role as politician Dan Egan in all seven seasons of the political comedy Veep. Other notable roles include Gordon Ford in Seasons 4 and 5 of Marvelous Miss Maisel, Marcus in Will and Grace, Griffin in Black-ish, Eli Cohen in Why Women Kill, and Dr. Todd Mauer in The Big C.

In a 2023 interview with Esquire, Scott discussed how his passion for acting came to be.

"My mom was a public-school art teacher, so we were very encouraged to be creative. I took art classes. I did drama club. I did some theater-y stuff. I was not fine-art artistically gifted or inclined in any way, but, to quote John Mulaney, I really liked attention. When I was in film school, I thought I was going to be a director and a writer. My parents, every semester, they'd say, 'Well, if you want to drop out and go to dental school, you can do that,'" he told the outlet.

He continued: "For the first 10 years of my acting career, people would ask me, 'What do you do?' And I never led with 'actor.' I would say, 'Oh, well, you know, I'm a writer and director and I do some acting.' Not that I didn't love it; I really did. The actors, my contemporaries that I came up with, were just so brilliant and on this different level. And I didn't feel like I had the same kind of ownership of that craft. I was like, 'No, those are actors. I'm just doing my best to keep up.'”

In a 2014 interview with Us Weekly, Scott talked about how he and his wife like to spend their free time.

"We love to cook. We spend a lot of time at home. Cooking a good meal, sipping some good wine, cuddling with the dog on the couch, and watching TV — it sounds like the most boring thing in the world, but we just love it."
