Miya originally followed in her family's footsteps and went into training to become a full-time officer with the NYPD. In her final semester, she made the bold decision to leave and pursue a career in music instead. This new direction led Miya to jobs as a dance and music instructor with an arts program for the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation and, later, a program director for the New York Junior Tennis League. In the past year, Miya quit her job to sing with an 11-piece funk band called Funktion 11 while also returning to college.
