New "A Closer Look": Seth Meyers Deems Trump's Mar-A-Lago "Barbie's Nightmarehouse"
Meyers poked fun at Trump's fraud trial, and his possible nomination for Speaker of the House, in the latest "A Closer Look" from the October 5 episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Former president Donald Trump's potential to become Speaker of the House following Kevin McCarthy's removal—and his reported interest in assuming the role—was the main focus of Late Night with Seth Meyers' latest "A Closer Look."
Host Seth Meyers began with Trump's irate comments over Manhattan fraud trial against him that's currently underway, which he chose to attend despite not being required to.
Highlighting Trump's false claim that he is "stuck here" and would rather be campaigning for the 2024 presidential election, Meyers joked, "he sounds like every single married couple during lockdown: "I'd rather be in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Ohio—but I'm stuck here!"

Meyers expressed skepticism at Trump's insistence that a New York judge allegedly undervalued his Florida Mar-a-Lago Club in a ruling. Likening the hotel to "Barbie's Nightmarehouse" and the castle that comes in a fish tank, Meyers said, "This thing looks like the first thing you buy when you get drafted for the Miami Heat."
Meyers also turned his attention to who will replace McCarthy as House speaker, and the weeklong recess the House is taking in the wake of McCarthy's removal to defuse tensions amid the Republican party.
"Only a week?" Meyers said, replaying Rep. Patrick McHenry's extremely loud gavel smash. "If someone at work did this in the middle of a meeting, I'd say I think we need to take five...months," Meyers said.
"A Closer Look": Seth Meyers on Trump taking the role of House Speaker
Citing Trump's statement that "a lot of people have been calling" him to consider accepting a Speaker of the House nomination, Meyers said, "the Republican party is such a mess, they're asking for help from a guy who's in court for fraud because no one else is willing to help them out."

"The GOP is like a guy who's so desperate for a ride to the airport, he calls a friend who's under house arrest," Meyers added. Watch the new "A Closer Look" above, and watch Late Night with Seth Meyers weeknights at 12:35/11:35c and streaming on Peacock
