Jack Black Covers My Chemical Romance in SNL's "Goth Kid on Vacation" Sketch
Welcome to the Black Parade (turns out, it's a beach in Jamaica) in this sketch starring the April 5 Host.
One thing about a Jack Black-hosted Saturday Night Live is, it's gonna rock. The A Minecraft Movie star and Tenacious D member covered Aerosmith during his April 5 monologue, starred in a hilarious bass guitar-focused sketch, and channeled My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way in the surprise third act of SNL's "Goth Kid on Vacation."
Starring Season 50 cast member Michael Longfellow as the titular sulking teen with dyed hair and a nose ring, the sketch begins as what seems to be a sweet ode to Jamaica. A reggae band's two singers (Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim are a great musical duo!) praise their home over footage of smiling locals. Then things take the first unexpected turn.
"But when there is war and struggle and pain / How do we fill our souls with joy again?" they sing. "We look and we laugh at: Goth kid on vacation.
You've definitely seen this kid before. "He no wear bathing suit, he wear big black jeans [Oh, no]," the reggae song continues. "He wear no sandal, he got combat boots on the beach." He hides from the sun, wants to go home, and consents to exactly one zip-line run.

Jack Black sings "Welcome to the Black Parade" in "Goth Kid on Vacation"
The already-funny concept reaches new heights when the song pivots to the goth kid's perspective, and becomes a parody of My Chemical Romance's 2006 video for "Welcome to the Black Parade" (you can watch it here for a comparison).
Wearing a black emo wig and surrounded by flags, Black sings the tune immediately recognizable to MRC fans, with new lyrics: "When I was a young boy / My parents took me down to Jamaica / For my high-school spring breaaaak..."
The bop turns into a mashup as Black's emo singer teams up with the reggae band to point out how sweaty the goth kid is getting from refusing to shed his outfit. "One love," Longfellow deadpans, taking the most glum sip of a piña colada we've ever seen.
"Dedicated to me as a teenager," SNL co-head writer Streeter Seidell wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that — like many pretapes — it was directed by Mike Diva, with music from producer JPon Da Track, whose past SNL collaborations include "Three Sad Virgins" and "Forgot About Lorne."

My Chemical Romance performed "Welcome to the Black Parade" on SNL
The real My Chemical Romance actually performed their hit song as Musical Guest on SNL.
During the October 21, 2006 episode with Host John C. Reilly, the band donned their distinctive Black Parade military jackets to perform the track. And SNL's parody might seem random, but it's actually uncannily timed: The band announced additional tickets to their Black Parade North American Tour on April 3.
