Munn first crossed paths with Mulaney in 2013 while attending a mutual friend's wedding. Munn recalled the chance meeting during a 2015 interview with HuffPost Live, where she admitted that she had fangirled a little too hard after running into the stand-up comedian.
"At first, it was cool, and then I kept going up to him at the wedding like, 'So you having fun?' I was just so obsessed with hanging out with and talking with him." Munn revealed, adding that she later sent Mulaney an email hoping to connect.
"He never emailed back. I might've got the wrong email — probably," Munn teased. "That's what I tell myself."

"Life is a lot better and happier now," Mulaney said while recalling how different his life had become since the last time he'd hosted. "I have a 12-week-old son. He is a pretty cool guy for someone who can't vote. His legs are like little calzones, and I want to eat him."

Mulaney revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March 2025 that Munn’s The Newsroom co-star and Law & Order's Sam Waterston served as their wedding officiant.

“He actually went to the bathroom in his diaper during it and announced it mid-vows,” he told Jimmy Kimmel. “Yeah, a very sweaty, little 2-year-old in a tuxedo just went, ‘I’m pooping.'"
