With the smash-hit status of her sophomore album, GUTS—and a highly anticipated GUTS world tour coming in 2024—you can count Olivia Rodrigo among the former Disney Channel kids (such as Zendaya and Selena Gomez) who've found major mainstream success.

How to Watch

Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and next day on Peacock

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter's first album, Sour, chronicled the frustrations and heartbreak of the 17-year-old she was before its 2021 release. The album's debut single, "drivers license," topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks in 2021, and it went on to win Best Solo Pop Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards. Rodrigo performed the song on the Grammys, and as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live's 46th season.

But before all of that, did you know that Rodrigo first made her TV performance debut with "drivers license" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

On February 4, 2021, Rodrigo sat down at the piano to perform "drivers license" on The Tonight Show. Though it was her first time playing the tender breakup ballad on national TV, you'd never know it from her pitch-perfect execution. With nothing but her backing music and dramatic lasers that changed color around her, the "vampire" singer's talent was a literal light in the dark.

Lyrics to "drivers license" by Olivia Rodrigo

I got my driver's license last week
Just like we always talked about
'Cause you were so excited for me
To finally drive up to your house
But today I drove through the suburbs
Crying 'cause you weren't around

And you're probably with that blonde girl
Who always made me doubt
She's so much older than me
She's everything I'm insecure about
Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs
'Cause how could I ever love someone else?

And I know we weren't perfect but I've never felt this way for no one
And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone
Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street

And all my friends are tired
Of hearing how much I miss you but
I kinda feel sorry for them
'Cause they'll never know you the way that I do
Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs
And pictured I was driving home to you

And I know we weren't perfect but I've never felt this way for no one
Oh, and I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone
I guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street

Red lights
Stop signs
I still see your face
In the white cars
Front yards
Can't drive past the places
We used to
Go to
'Cause I still f_ing love you, babe

Sidewalks
We crossed
I still hear your voice
In the traffic
We're laughing
Over all the noise
God, I'm so blue
Know we're through
But I still f_ing love you, babe

I know we weren't perfect but I've never felt this way for no one
And I just can't imagine how you could be so okay now that I'm gone
Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me
'Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street
Yeah, you said forever now I drive alone past your street
