[Spoiler] Made Adam Levine Lose Joy in Singing—Here’s How He Found It Again
The Voice Coach needed to go back to basics.
After so many years in the spotlight, first as lead singer of Maroon 5 and then also as a Coach on The Voice, Adam Levine has had to learn how to keep the passion alive. And sometimes, he explained, that means going back to basics.
Adam Levine's advice for hitting high notes applies to so many other areas
During the first round of Knockouts on Season 27 of The Voice, Team Adam Artist Lucia Flores-Wiseman asked for help with a particular issue that Levine, as master of the falsetto, can definitely speak to: She was nervous about her higher register.
"There’s the technical side which is, be warm, make sure you’ve done it enough times," he advised, adding, "then the other side of it is, questioning whether I can do it, because that’s a surefire way to not do it. Self-belief, and realizing that you have something to offer, and that you’re a really talented person, which you are, is half the battle."
He then opened up about his own journey, recalling, "I got to a point where, when I was working all the time, I’d just had a couple of kids…I was stressed out, so, of course, my voice was affected by that. And it wasn’t joyful to go and sing on stage."

The way he got back into it, he says, was to train his voice so it could all come a bit easier. "I kind of, from a technical side, re-learned how to do it a little bit. I started having a better time doing it. Focusing on the technicalities of it sometimes can take your brain away from all the crap you’re thinking about in your head," Levine said. By his logic, when you sound good, it makes you confident, which gives you joy in the performance. Great advice!

The one song Adam Levine won't sing
Despite his natural talent and immense popularity, there's one challenge Levine just doesn't wanna face: the national anthem (not the Lana Del Rey song). During a chat with his fellow Coaches, he revealed that he's never performed "The Star-Spangled Banner," admitting, "It scares the s--t out of me. That's the one thing you'll never see me do. I'll never do it."
