Jesse Spencer Is Returning to Chicago Fire as Casey for the Season 11 Finale
Welcome back to Firehouse 51 (again!), Matthew Casey. We've missed you.
Chicago Fire fans, your day just got a whole lot better: Jesse Spencer is returning for the Season 11 finale as Matthew Casey. Yes, you read that correctly: After reprising his iconic role in Season 11, Episode 18, Spencer is coming back to round out the season. Huzzah!
Not much is known about finale storylines at this point — but Spencer's appearance in Episode 18 certainly left fans with questions. The beloved character made it clear that things aren't exactly gelling in Oregon. In fact, when his ex, Brett (Kara Killmer), told him that she was dating someone, he lied and said he was too just to keep up appearances. In reality, though, Casey is single, and it seems like he's indulging in the idea of returning to Chicago — and potentially starting things back up with Brett.
That's quite literally what Spencer told NBC Insider when we asked him about the possibility of his character returning for future episodes.
"The idea when I left the show was that if it was appropriate and it would work with the storyline they wanted to do, I would be open — and they would be open — to bringing Casey back," he said. "The storyline [in Episode 18] does allude to Casey sort of eyeing whether he could actually move back to 51. Can he potentially, in the future, rekindle his relationship with Brett [Kara Killmer] and start that fire again? We’re 'gonna have to see. Casey’s looking at it; it’s a potential thing, but we just don’t know right now. We’ll leave that to the future. We’ll throw it to the gods and see what they say."
Of course, it's important to note that as of now, Spencer is only slated to appear in the finale episode of Season 11. One thing is certain, though: He's thrilled to be working with his 51 family again.
"It was really great," Spencer said when we talked to him about returning for Episode 18. "It had been a while; it’d been, like, over a year or something since I’d been back. But it's like riding a bike, you know? There are familiar faces. I know pretty much all the crew and pretty much all the cast. I had a ball."
Watch Chicago Fire on NBC Wednesdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock. The Season 11 finale airs on May 24.
