"You Can't Sing Better Than That": Behind "Spectacular" Bryson Battle's Unreal Battle
Watch The Voice Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
Bryson Battle certainly lives up to his name. The young singer, who earned the coveted 4-Chair Turn during his Blind Audition for Season 27 of The Voice, brought all his talent and charm to his Battle round, earning high marks from Coach John Legend.
Bryson Battle's artistic journey is just starting on The Voice
The Artist still has one year left at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and wants to move to New York after graduation to pursue musical theater. If he were at school instead of on The Voice, he explained, he'd be playing the titular role in Jesus Christ, Superstar, which Legend played in NBC's 2017 live concert. As Battle said, he's learning from "another Jesus."
"I always wanted to make music and make art, but I grew up in a small town…there wasn’t a ton of diversity," he explained, adding that "My parents did a wonderful job of making sure I got exposed to the arts." Now, The Voice is “pushing me in the direction I want to go in.”

Battle was paired with Ari Camille to sing Muni Long's "Made For Me." In rehearsal, Legend advised him, "Your voice is gorgeous [but] lay it back in moments," to keep him from going "too musical theater-y." He instructed Battle to "find the fun."
He simply crushed it when it came time to perform. Coach Adam Levine remembered his fantastic Blind Audition and said, "You were just spectacular then as you are now," saying simply, "You can’t sing better than that."

Kelsea Ballerini praised both Battle and Camille, and the way they worked together, saying, "You guys both have these big, bold voices that demand attention…you held space for each other." Michael Bublé joked that he and Battle had "identical voices...I wish!," calling both him and Camille "geniuses."
Legend observed, "Everybody’s jaw is on the floor seeing what you can do with your voice" and chose Battle as the winner of the round. He is "truly one of the best vocalists we have in the competition this season," Legend said.
Legend made his love of Battle's voice known from the Blind Auditions, telling the Artist at the time, "You made [the song] feel fresh and new and exciting...We’re truly blessed to have you on the show. This is why The Voice exists."
