Flamingos Showing Off Their Mating Dance on The Americas Is Absolutely Hypnotizing (WATCH)
It’s an all-pink dance party as 40,000 flamingos shake their tail feathers in perfect harmony.
From the icebound reaches of the northern Arctic all the way to the tip of South America, The Americas on NBC already has given us some extraordinary glimpses of nature’s hidden majesty across the length and breadth of two entire continents. But there’s nothing quite like watching a parade of wild flamingos unite — almost as if by magic — to stage a sassy courtship “dance-off” on the high plains of Bolivia, throwing a pastel-colored party that few humans ever get to see firsthand.
As seen in Sunday night's "The Andes" episode, Tom Hanks cheekily narrates the flamboyantly pink birds’ seasonal mating rite like the sociable mixer that it is, dropping the needle on some festive dance tunes that perfectly backdrop the amazingly well-choreographed event. Check it out in the video below!

Not unlike the unified pivot sometimes seen when an entire school of fish turns on a dime, the flamingos’ instinctively agreed-upon ritual all begins “on an unseen cue,” as Hanks puts it. In an elaborate mate-seeking process that can last for weeks on end, three species of flamingos come together to shake their tail feathers until (almost) everybody’s found their one and only perfect partner.
“One by one, lovers unite, as eventually they find a mate,” explains Hanks of the spectacular scene. The Americas captures the moment with astounding aerial footage, showcasing the vast scope of the big birds’ dance party in South America’s Laguna Colorada — a shallow, starkly beautiful salt lake high in the remote plains of the Altiplano (literally “high plain”) of western Bolivia.
How to watch The Americas on NBC
In all, the marathon dance-off enlists the participation of more than 40,000 flamingos, but it’s by no means the only natural wonder that awaits in “The Andes,” the 7th hour-long episode of The Americas, now available to stream on Peacock.
