Fans have been rooting for Firehouse 51's finest Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) on Season 13 of Chicago Fire, even as he takes some time away from his post.

How to Watch

Watch Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock

Between his disheartening breakup with Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and his ongoing issues with alcohol abuse, Carver has struggled on the road to recovery. He was doing his best to numb his pain by throwing himself into the CFD grind, but after relapsing, he made the difficult decision to take a furlough to get his head back on straight. Carver's been running from these demons for decades, but it seems like peace is finally on the horizon for him.

After weeks of wishing Carver well in his recovery, viewers got an exciting update about him in the April 2 episode of Chicago Fire: He's coming back!

Read details, below:

Why Jake Lockett's Carver hasn't been on Chicago Fire

Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) appears in Season 13 Episode 6 of Chicago Fire.

While Carver had been attending AA meetings in hopes of tackling his issues, he didn't find much peace within the 12-step program. Picking up additional floater shifts at the CFD didn't help much. either, so when Carver felt compelled to drink again, he realized he needed to make a change.

After discussing it with his commanding officer, Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Carver took an extended furlough to go to rehab. After leaving Violet a heartwarming note in her locker, Carver was off, and we've had little updates from him while he's been getting the help he needs.

When is Jake Lockett's Carver returning to Chicago Fire?

In Chicago Fire's April 2 episode, viewers learned that Carver is returning to Firehouse 51 very soon — the next shift, in fact. Carver texted Violet the update out of the blue. Violet was rendered speechless by the text, making paramedic Lizzie Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) panic.

"What's wrong?" Novak asked her.

"Nothing, it's Carver," Violet explained, staring down at her phone. "He's coming back next shift."

Violet was mighty contemplative after the sudden development, giving us reason to think there are mixed emotions surrounding Carver's return. It seems like Violet and Carver have a lot of catching up to do, and Chi-Hards can't wait for to see what happens next shift.

Find out how Carver navigates his Firehouse 51 return by watching Chicago Fire on Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and the next day on Peacock
