Why Dan + Shay Say the Coaches Are “So Stupid” for Not Turning for Frank Garcia
Watch as Frank Garcia — a 19-year-old from Roma, Texas — becomes the newest member of Team Dan + Shay!
First-time Coaches Dan + Shay (aka Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) lightly roasted their fellow Season 25 Coaches on Monday night's episode of The Voice following a soulful Blind Audition from 19-year-old Frank Garcia, who performed a cover of Adele's "Love in the Dark." The show's first-ever Coaching duo turned their custom-made Double Chair around less than 30 seconds into Garcia's audition.
“I was blown away by your performance," Smyers told the young contestant. "Anytime anybody chooses to sing an Adele song, those are big shoes to fill, and you absolutely crushed it. It was so confident."

“As soon as you started singing, I was like, ‘We’re turning this chair around,'" added Mooney. "I can’t believe these guys [referring to other Coaches]. You look so dumb right now." He later continued: “As incredible as [Garcia] was, I think he’s even better than what we saw. I feel like he can just blow everybody else out of the water, and [the other Coaches] are gonna feel so stupid for not turning their chairs. It’s gonna feel pretty great.”

Originally hailing from the town of Roma, Texas, Garcia previously competed on the fourth season of La Voz Kids (the Spanish-language equivalent of The Voice for young performers between 7 and 15 years of age) and made it all the way to the Battles before elimination. "But this is, like, the big leagues," acknowledged the newest member of Team Dan + Shay. While he grew up performing Mariachi music, Frank now focuses on R&B as a way to truly express himself.

"I feel like it really helped me embrace myself," Garcia explained. "Even though I love Mariachi music, and it's my culture, it did feel very restrictive. I just couldn't be who I wanted to be. Since I was little, I knew that I was gay. Because we do live right next to the border of Mexico, there does tend to be a lot of Conservative ideologies and traditional views. It was really hard for me to grow up most of my life. I felt like I just couldn't be myself. But I just remember the day that my dad came into my room and I told him that I was gay. He just told me he was gonna be there for me and that he loved me. That just felt so comforting."
Dan + Shay are certainly over the Moon with their choice to turn around, with Smyers stating: “I couldn’t stop smiling after we got Frank. He looks like a star, carries himself like a star."
