Wait, Blake Shelton Wrote a Pitbull Song? The Music Blake Shelton Has Done for Other Artists

Country singer Blake Shelton had an unexpected collaboration with a rapper for a pop dance hit in 2020.

By Caitlin Schunn

You know Blake Shelton as a veteran coach on The Voice, and as a star on the country music stage. But as he hangs up his Coaching hat after this season, his wife, Gwen Stefani, is one of many hoping he’ll turn his attention to something else: writing songs.

How to Watch

Watch The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

It’s no surprise the successful country singer has also made his mark in songwriting. Take a look at songs he's penned for other artists over the years.

Shelton and Stefani have written three songs together during their relationship, but none since tying the knot in July 2021.

Their singles include “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” in 2016, Stefani’s 2018 holiday song “You Make It Feel Like Christmas,” and another 2018 holiday song, “Christmas Eve.”

But Stefani told DJ Khaled on his The First One podcast she wants to pen more songs with her husband, even if that seems unlikely.

“I wish he would write with me, but he doesn’t really write anymore,” Stefani told DJ Khaled in March 2021, according to Taste of Country. “He just doesn’t like writing that much. It makes me so mad.”

Shelton collaborated with other songwriters to create a song for the country group Pistol Annies in 2011. This led to their track “Family Feud” from their debut album, Hell On Wheels.

But the country crooner’s most surprising writing byline to date is for Pitbull’s “Get Ready” in the winter of 2020. It was the duo’s twist on Ram Jam’s 1977 hit “Black Betty.”

Mr. Worldwide himself joined forces with Shelton to release the party pop track—with Blake Shelton also contributing some vocals, and even referring to Pitbull as “Pit.”

Gil Green, the director of the music video for “Get Ready,” described the project on YouTube as, “uniting people from two different backgrounds to show that we all party and get down the same way.” The video even jumped between Shelton’s home in Nashville and the Hard Rock Casino in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

The unlikely collab happened after Pitbull met Shelton’s dog named Black Betty at a performance, Pitbull said on his YouTube channel.

Pitbull compared the collab to “when Run-DMC and Aerosmith did ‘Walk This Way.’”

Most people enjoyed the surprising pair together, with one person tweeting, “The new @blakeshelton and @pitbull song is the mashup I didn’t know I needed in my life.” Another person commented on YouTube, “This ole Oklahoma grandma was up out of her chair. Jam!!!!”

See if Team Blake takes home the crown one last time on Shelton’s final season of The Voice, airing Mondays at 8/7c and streaming on Peacock.
