Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Billie Eilish Take Us to "Tampon Farm" on SNL
The pretaped musical sketch channeled the crunchy vibes of Lilith Fairs past, starring current and former women of SNL, longtime SNL writer Paula Pell, and Billie Eilish.
Season 49 of Saturday Night Live has put forth some excellent pretaped sketches, from "Lake Beach" in Nate Bargatze's episode to "Fully Naked in New York" from Emma Stone's. "Tampon Farm," the final musical sketch of 2023, arrived in Kate McKinnon's December 16 Christmas episode, and it felt like a love letter to the past and current women who've made SNL great. It also doubled as a strong argument for the return of '90s female-focused music tour Lilith Fair.
"Tampon Farm" opens with Kate McKinnon strumming the guitar in a sunny field, singing an Indigo Girls-esque folk ode to some hard-working, banana-chomping women (SNL alums Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig). As the song builds to the chorus, we find out where they are: Tampon Farm, a place where tampons literally grow on trees.
Cast members Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, and Chloe Fineman play women down on the farm, as does musical guest Billie Eilish, who contributes backing vocals and proudly shows off a harvest basket full of you-know-whats. Also on hand as one of the farmers is Paula Pell, who wrote for SNL from 1995-2020. Pell also wrote the 2015 Amy Poehler-Tina Fey film Sisters, and starred alongside Poehler, Rudolph, and Fey in 2019's Wine Country. Pell also co-wrote Rachel Dratch's famous "Debbie Downer" sketch, among so many others.

On Tampon Farm, the female hygiene products flow like wine, everybody gets an acoustic guitar, and women enjoy each other's company in more ways than one.
Unfortunately, we learn by the end of the song, this doesn't leave room for a ton of actual tampon farming. The farm is ultimately condemned, but its spirit of togetherness can live on in our hearts.
