Why Carson Daly Originally Told Gwen Stefani Not to Date Blake Shelton
The Voice Host told Stefani that she should "pump the brakes" when she first started dating Shelton.
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton's loving relationship could've gone much differently — that is, if they listened to the advice of their close friend Carson Daly seven years ago.
In 2021, after getting engaged to Shelton, Stefani appeared on the TODAY show with Daly to discuss how things almost went down between her and the cowboy when they first started dating.
"You and I have very unique proprietary information regarding your relationship with my friend, Blake," Daly teased to Stefani. "I was reminded of a story this morning that I'll share with everybody."

He continued, "Five years ago, when you started to date Blake, you'll remember this. We went back to your old house in L.A. and I sat you and Blake down in the kitchen, and I said: 'You guys, pump the brakes. This is not good. This is not gonna work.'"
When asked why he made that comment, Daly had the best response. "I looked at Gwen and I said, 'You're much, much too good for this guy. You're smart. You're intelligent, you're one of my oldest friends, and then there's Blake,'" he said, poking fun at his dear friend while Stefani giggled.

Then, Daly put a romantic twist on the conversation. "What surprises you most about Blake coming into your life five years later, now you're gonna marry the guy. What do you attribute it too?" he asked Stefani.
Stefani then said sweetly, "What don't I love about Blake? And what don't we all love about Blake? He's just such a good guy. He's one of the most generous human beings and down to earth. He's so gifted and so unique and talented. He really just is my best friend, and I feel just so excited that I have someone in my life that now I have a chance at happiness. It's just a blessing, the whole thing, and it is a miracle."
