Christopher Landon’s last couple of horror movies have had outlandish premises, like a serial killer body-swap or a slasher time loop. But Drop, his latest, is thrilling for a different reason. There’s nothing supernatural about this movie, which the stars say makes it so much scarier.

In Drop, which hits theaters on April 11, Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus, The Good Daughter) plays a young widowed mother who finally decides to start dating again. While at dinner with her date, Henry, played by Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us, Yellowstone spin-off 1923), she starts getting threatening messages AirDropped to her phone. The demand? Kill her date without tipping him off that something’s up, otherwise, an intruder will kill her son, who is back at home being babysat by her sister. Can she go through with it? Can she find a way to save them both? Can she keep her cool? It doesn’t seem like there are a lot of options.

Meghann Fahy & Brandon Sklenar Talk Drop

“What creeps me out the most is just feeling like you’re trapped,” Sklenar said of the scenario in a new featurette about the Blumhouse-produced film. “You can’t do anything about it. You can’t text anybody, you can’t call anybody. You’re being watched at all angles, you’re being listened to at all angles. Your back’s up against the wall. It’s absolutely terrifying.”

“It’s definitely a thriller, it’s definitely going to keep you on the edge of your seat,” Fahy added. “The thing that’s so scary about the film is that you could totally see a world in which this could happen to someone.”

Landon, director of Happy Death Death and Freaky, two horror movies with fun, meta twists, praised his lead actors’ performances in Drop.

“Meghann and Brandon take big swings, and you can feel that on screen,” Landon says of the stars.

In addition to Fahy and Sklenar, Drop stars Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project), Reed Diamond (Moneyball), Gabrielle Ryan (Power Book IV: Force), Jeffery Self (Mack & Rita), and Travis Nelson (The Lake).

The film is produced by Jason Blum (Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN) for Blumhouse and by Michael Bay (Transformers films, A Quiet Place franchise), Brad Fuller (A Quiet Place films, The Purge franchise), and Cameron Fuller (The Astronaut) for Platinum Dunes. The executive producer is Sam Lerner.

Drop drops into theaters on April 11.
