Kelly Clarkson Somehow Turned a Blink-182 Song Into a Stunning Vocal Showcase
What can't she do?
Kelly Clarkson proved she can pull off any genre with her cover of Blink-182’s 1999 hit “All the Small Things.”
It happened on January 10's episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. The performance started off with some hard-hitting drums as Clarkson stood wearing an edgy choker necklace and a red flannel shirt. “All the small things, true care, truth bring. I'll take one lift, your ride, best trip,” she sang the song’s signature intro lyrics effortlessly.
Then, things began to pick up in intensity. “Always, I know, you'll be at my show. Watching, waiting, commiserating," she sang while putting her own twist on the melody as the guitars played gradual, stagnant chords.
“Say it ain't so, I will not go, turn the lights off, carry me home,” she continued with passion. And in one surprising choice, she chose to sing the song’s legendary “na-na-nas” herself, harmonizing perfectly with her backup singer.
Then, during the song’s breakdown, the guitars and drums played while Clarkson moved around onstage, clapping her hands and encouraging the audience. “C’mon!” she cheered with enthusiasm. “Just say it ain't so, I will not go, turn the lights off, carry me home,” she sang the song’s upbeat melody again.
“Keep your head still, I'll be your thrill; the night will go on, my little windmill. Say it ain't so, I will not go, turn the lights off, carry me home,” she then belted her heart out in one show-stopping note.
Clarkson finished things off by singing, “I will go on, my little windmill,” in a gentle tone while the audience erupted in applause.
This isn’t the only time Clarkson has channeled her rocker side to cover a song. In an earlier Kellyoke segment, she used an edgy raspy tone while singing the 2019 hit “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers. During the performance, she danced on the stairs near the audience while wearing a navy blue jumpsuit, and ended the song on a sultry subdued note.
