Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg have been friends for so long that it almost feels passé to call what they have an “unlikely friendship.” Sure, at first blush, you wouldn’t think that the home and hospitality icon and the Grammy-nominated rapper would be BFFs, but they have a friendship going back nearly a decade and a half. Martha and Snoop actually have a lot in common — especially now that they’re both fixtures on NBC, as she’s the co-host of the upcoming cooking competition show Yes, Chef! and Snoop was one of the Coaches on The Voice, to say nothing of his exploits during the 2024 Paris Olympics

How to Watch

Watch the series premiere of Yes, Chef! on Monday, April 28 at 10/9c on NBC.

Here’s everything you need to know about Martha and Snoop’s beautiful, years-long friendship.

Martha, who was born in 1941, is of course famous as a businesswoman and television personality with a focus on home and hospitality. Part of her empire was her daytime cooking show The Martha Stewart Show, also known as simply Martha, which premiered in 2005. It was in 2008 that Snoop Dogg, a West Coast rapper born in 1971, appeared as a guest. The two hit it off immediately in an opposites-attract kind of way, making mashed potatoes as Snoop taught Martha slang like “foshizzle.”

“What an odd couple we were,” Martha said in a 2019 NBC interview of their first on-screen interactions.

“Martha kind of pioneered this as far as letting rappers become part of daytime television because we were not actually accepted,” Snoop added. “But we fit right in. Cooking with Martha just seemed like a nice place to be.”

They reunited a year later when Snoop returned to Martha for a 2019 Christmas episode. The pair made brownies together — and given Snoop Dogg’s famous use of marijuana, there were, of course, jokes about a certain special ingredient missing from Martha's recipe.

“Why not bake them at 420 degrees?” Snoop asked when Martha put the brownies in the oven, only for her to deadpan back: “Because they’ll get overdone. Baking is an exact science.”

These two TV appearances were the foundation of what would become a famous friendship. Although some social media posts suggested they were in contact with each other — like Snoop asking Martha for advice on what to bring to Prince William’s bachelor party or thanking her for help with a line of candles on X (formerly Twitter) — the early '10s didn’t see a lot of friend activity.

That all changed in 2015, and it was at Justin Bieber’s expense.

In 2015, Martha and Snoop were two of the celebrities that Comedy Central gathered to tear singer Justin Bieber to comical shreds in one of the network’s celebrity roasts. ("Listening to you yell your jokes for the past hour is the hardest time I've ever done," Martha said of Bieber’s attempts at comebacks, making light of her own time behind bars. “Justin, you’re so pretty, when inmates see your mug shot, they swipe right,” Snoop said, joking about Bieber’s own brush with the law.)

Snoop and Martha were sitting next to each other during the roast, and in that 2019 interview Snoop said she “stole the show.”

"In that moment, I knew I wanted to be alongside this lady for the rest of my life," he said.

In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers shortly after the roast, Martha said that she did not and does not smoke marijuana, but she joked that she got a contact high just by being next to Snoop and the “big fat ones” he was smoking.

Looking back at the moment in the 2024 Netflix documentary about Martha, fittingly titled Martha, Snoop identified this as the start of what would become a fruitful friendship and business partnership.

"We just so happened to be sitting side by side, and my second-hand smoke created an idea that maybe we should hang out and talk about things," he said. (For what it’s worth, Martha wanted Snoop to score the documentary rather than the “lousy classic music” heard in the final film.)

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg co-hosted a cooking show together

In the summer of 2016, news broke that Martha and Snoop would be hosting a reality show together, Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party. The show ran for two seasons and a spin-off on VH1, premiering in November of that year and ending in February 2020. Season 3, branded as Martha & Snoop's Potluck Party Challenge, was a competition series that the duo promoted with a Titanic-themed trailer riffing on their now-close relationship.

“At our dinner party, we will exemplify America’s fascination with food, entertaining, and celebrity,” Martha said in a press release, adding that the series “will redesign the traditional food competition shows in a new, different, and very funny way."

“My homegirl, Martha and I have a special bond that goes back,” Snoop added.

The pair appeared on TV a few times to promote the then-upcoming series, first on the ABC game show $100,000 Pyramid where they showed how well they understood each other by acing a weed-related practice round and then learning a bit more about each other by playing "Never Have I Ever" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. (Some of the things the two friends learned they have in common? They’ve both been to nude beaches and they’ve both sexted.)

If Martha and Snoop were professional acquaintances who seemed to get along, their tenure co-hosting the show seems to have made them legitimate friends.

“I’ve never met anyone like Martha Stewart,” Snoop said in a 2016 Rolling Stone interview. “When we come together, it’s a natural combination of love, peace, and harmony.”

In 2018, while their cooking series was still ongoing, Snoop released a cookbook of his own, From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes From Tha Boss Dogg's Kitchen. Martha, who has written 100 books, penned the introduction to Snoop’s book.

“Working with Snoop in the kitchen has been a remarkable experience for me,” Martha, who said the pair had “a special bond,” wrote in the intro. “Not only has he taught me new lingo and cultural references, he surprised me with his unique cooking techniques and recipes."

Martha has praised Snoop’s cooking before. She told CBS once that the rapper’s Cornish game hens “were the best thing so far on this show," and Snoop has repeatedly credited Martha for making him a better cook.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg keep finding ways to collaborate and hang out

Martha & Snoop's Potluck ended in 2020, but the friends and frequent collaborators keep joining forces. An early episode of Martha's Martha Knows Best in August 2020 had Snoop calling in via video for help in potting some tomato plants. They also co-hosted the 2021 and 2022 Puppy Bowls for Animal Planet, played the Best Friends Challenge on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and hosted a Peacock special, Snoop and Martha's Very Tasty Halloween. Snoop was the first guest on Martha's podcast and they even collaborated on a series of handbags with BIC lighters in them.

Last summer, Martha and Snoop went to Paris together as part of NBC’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics. The pair’s now-iconic chemistry was a natural fit for the games, and in between the athletic competition, they got up to antics like making Snoop try escargot for the first time or conquering his fear of horses

“We just have fun. He and I see eye to eye on a lot of things,” Martha said of her and Snoop while speaking to Jimmy Fallon last fall. She added that she and Snoop help each other out constantly, even adding that she was helping the rapper with his next album.

”I don’t do his music, of course, although I am helping him out,” she said. “He just asked me to do something on social media for his new album.”

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg are just friends, for the record!

Snoop and Martha's friendship is now famous, to the point where people are constantly asking them about each other, as Martha recalled in a recent interview, via Insider.

"I said, you know, Snoop, when I go to a party, all people wanna know is, 'How is Snoop Dogg?'" Martha recalled. "And he said, 'You wanna know something, Martha? When I go to a party, everybody wants to know how's Martha.'"

This close professional and personal friendship might have some wondering if the spark between them might blossom into something more. That is not the case. For starters, Snoop, 53, has been married to his wife, Shante Taylor, since 1997. (They briefly split in 2004 but renewed their vows in 2008.) They have four children together. Martha, 83, is not currently married (she has one daughter from her marriage to Andrew Stewart, which ended in 1990), but she isn’t interested in Snoop that way regardless.

"Snoop is younger than my daughter," Martha told Good Day New York (per PEOPLE)"We have to have a professional relationship... Everybody likes him. It's so nice that he's popular, and the guests really adore him [on our show] and respond to him nicely. And he has a great sense of humor."

Yes, Chef! premieres on NBC on Monday, April 28, at 10/9c following The Voice.
